Ocean Literacy Grant

Connecting Tennessee to the World Ocean

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has chosen to recognize and support the Aquarium’s ongoing educational efforts.  The new grant-funded initiative, Connecting Tennessee to the World Ocean, advances the Tennessee Aquarium’s strategic plan and NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in Earth’s environment while teaching conservation principles aimed at protecting marine resources.  This message is the cornerstone of the educational programming that reaches tens of thousands of students each year at the Aquarium and within regional schools.

Working in partnership with NOAA, the Tennessee Aquarium will increase ocean literacy in the region by providing more educational opportunities for underrepresented students, expanding facilities to increase audience engagement, creating an ocean-themed lecture series to develop community dialogue, and supporting professional staff development to advance educational programming. The impact of these activities will increase awareness and change behaviors among inland residents who might not have otherwise thought about their connection to the world ocean.
