“Art by the Animals” AZA Auction 2008

“Happy Feet”
By Peep, 2008
Tennessee Aquarium

Peep the Penguin painting

This framed and matted piece of original animal art, with photo of the artist at work, is a foot print created by the happy feet of Peep, a Gentoo Penguin. Made using white, green and blue non-toxic paint on black poster-board, the artwork also includes textured scratches made as this brush-tailed penguin dragged her stiff tail through the paint.

Peep is a curious 17-year old female Gentoo that inhabits Penguins’ Rock at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She is one of only two Gentoo penguins who chooses to paint as an animal enrichment activity in the gallery back-up area. When painting was first introduced, Peep had cold feet and was very skittish — but after several sessions, she became more comfortable with walking in paint. After she walks through the paint, a tasty snack of smelt goes a long way toward rewarding her for her efforts!

Peep was hatched at Sea World San Diego in 1991 before moving to San Antonio and finally to the Tennessee Aquarium in 2007. Although she is the oldest penguin in the colony, she can be seen diving into 45 degree water where she zooms at torpedo-like speed underwater, propelling herself back onto dry land to join her mate.

On Tuesday, September 16th from 4-7 p.m. view the live “Art by Animals” Auction and bid interactively at www.auctionnetwork.com.  This auction will take place during the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ annual conference to raise funds for AZA accredited institutions and bring awareness to their animal enrichment and conservation programs.

See the Aquarium’s Gentoo and Macaroni penguins at Penguins’ Rock.
