Sustainable Seafood
There is a rising tide of sustainability efforts in Chattanooga. As part of this movement, we’d like everyone to take a look beyond our region and recognize that what we put on our plates also impacts the world ocean. Globally, one-third of all fished species have collapsed. Put simply, people currently eat too many fish from too few species. But there are great options available that can lead to positive change. That’s why the Tennessee Aquarium is proud to announce our sustainable seafood initiative, Serve & Protect. We’re collaborating with celebrity chef Alton Brown on this long-term initiative to help people understand the problem and discover savory choices that can improve personal health while protecting wildlife downstream.
Aquarium visitors will learn about select species on display and then discover new ways to prepare these seafood offerings at home. Brown is developing recipes specifically for this program and providing information about how to purchase sustainable seafood at local markets. This see it, buy it, cook it and eat it approach is designed to help everyone better understand fish, their habitats and what is sustainable.
Let’s be honest, conversations about sustainable seafood can be confusing. As a simple solution to eating more sustainably, we support seafood caught or raised in the United States. Buying American not only supports U.S. jobs, but we also believe our own regulations are an important way to ensure sustainable fishing practices in wild caught or farm raised fish. And since public demand is the driving force for restaurants and grocery stores that provide products, this is an easy way for YOU, the customer, to get involved.
Alton Brown is a James Beard award-winning cookbook author, host of two of Food Network’s most popular shows, Good Eats and Iron Chef America. He is also a SCUBA diver who is passionate about sustainable cuisine.
