Exciting Tennessee Aquarium RiverRocks Events Oct. 1st – 10th
Cliffhangers at IMAX, Gorge Cruises and Special Aquarium Activities

Chattanooga, Tenn. (September 21, 2010) -  Thousands of outdoor enthusiasts will descend upon Chattanooga October 1st through 10th for RiverRocks, a new festival celebrating and supporting the area’s natural assets. More than 90 events are scheduled during RiverRocks ranging from gentle thrills aboard hot air balloons in Coolidge Park to kayak races and peak performance events such as rock climbing. The Tennessee Aquarium, IMAX 3D Theater and River Gorge Explorer will be among the featured RiverRocks venues with special programs added to the visitor experience both within the venues and out in nature.

Thrill seekers will feel an adrenaline rush at IMAX when the Great Adventure Film Festival hits the giant screen October 1st through the 14th.  Five heart-pounding films will take guests on virtual trips from the highest point on Earth to the deepest and most amazing caves on the planet and rocketing across space with NASA astronauts to the most distant points of the known universe. Audiences will also have an opportunity to go sky-surfing or join a team on a splashy whitewater ride down the wild Colorado River.

Special Adventure Film Festival pricing allows everyone to enjoy all five films at their leisure -Adventures in Wild California, Everest, Journey Into Amazing Caves , Grand Canyon Adventure 3D and Hubble 3D - for just $20.

At the Aquarium, a slate of experts will host RiverRocks presentations in the River Journey Auditorium. These added experiences will give visitors an introduction to rock climbing, trail running, bouldering, outdoor photography, canoeing and kayaking.

Joe Jacobi is one of the featured presenters. His new role as CEO of USA Canoe / Kayak is to help Olympians win gold and also invite others to a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone. “You don’t have to be an expert kayaker,” said Jacobi. “The attributes of being in a kayak, or other type of human powered boat, are terrific.”

These special adventure presentations are offered FREE with Aquarium admission Oct. 1 -10 in the River Journey Auditorium.

Learn fascinating facts while birding, nature hiking or even spelunking deep below a local mountain. Check out the events tab on the Tennessee Aquarium’s website for RiverRocks outdoor adventures:

Cruising aboard the River Gorge Explorer is one way to introduce people to the protected habitat within “Tennessee’s Grand Canyon” during RiverRocks.  Aquarium naturalists point out wildlife and highlight the rich history within the Gorge on every cruise.

The Tennessee Aquarium has been helping the Tennessee River Gorge Trust preserve land in the Gorge for more than a decade. Money collected from the coin drop in the Aquarium’s River Journey building has added up to more than $270,000 since the coin drop was installed on Earth Day in 1996. “We are pleased to help the Tennessee River Gorge Trust protect vital habitat in Chattanooga’s backyard,” said Charlie Arant, Tennessee Aquarium president and CEO. “The River Gorge Explorer gives our visitors an excellent opportunity to explore, and learn about, this scenic treasure.”
