River Teachers
Date: July 16th-18th (July 18th optional field trip)
Time: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm ET
The goal of “River Teachers” is to connect educators with local aquatic biodiversity and empower them to nurture generations of environmental stewards!
Participants will gain confidence in teaching about the significance of nearby streams, receive curriculum that pertains to our Ridges to Rivers gallery, and have time to collaborate to develop engaging classroom activities. This program emphasizes hands-on learning experiences and fosters connections between classroom curriculum and real-world environmental issues. Additionally, we will provide opportunities to integrate citizen science initiatives, empowering educators, and students to contribute valuable data while exploring the wonders of their local waterways.
Thanks to grant funds, we are able to provide a stipend for this 2024 PD opportunity! The total stipend amounts to $675; the breakdown is as follows:
- $125 for a pre-PD evaluation of our Ridges to Rivers gallery signage (will provide photos of signs if you are not local)
- $150/day (7/16th-18th)
- $100 post-evaluation of the PD opportunity
Schedule:
- Tuesday, July 16 – Tennessee Aquarium tour and environmental science activities
- Wednesday, July 17 – Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute (TNACI) tour and a habitat/stream experience (half day field trip)
- Thursday, July 18 – Snorkeling field trip (weather permitting)
Registration opens May 31 at 10:00 am ET and will close once filled.
Due to high demand, we ask that only 1 educator from each institution registers for this PD (if you are within the same institution but are in different departments, we ask you limit to 2 registrants). We will monitor registration and inform educators if there are any changes.
