Appearing in late summer to fall, pinkish-purple plumes appear over sedge-like grass blades creating a striking haze in the sunlight. A native ornamental grass, pink muhly adds color and texture later in the season. American goldfinches and sparrows take advantage of the seed come winter. This plants native range extends as far south as Mexico and Guatemala in isolated pockets.

Range
Nearly all of Tennessee, specifically drier prairie type areas.
Habitat
Thin rocky soils, especially those that were formerly burned. Found in open woodlands, savannas, dry woodlands and mountains by rock outcrops.
