Laboratory Volunteers work closely with our professional laboratory staff, contributing to the critical water quality monitoring and testing that supports the health and welfare of the Aquarium’s diverse collection of marine and freshwater species. This role provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in aquatic chemistry, bacteriology, and laboratory operations within our dynamic aquarium environment.

Qualificationsadd
Laboratory volunteers should:
- Have a passion for aquatic life, conservation, and water quality
- Be interested in gaining hands-on experience in laboratory operations and aquatic chemistry
- Have excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- Be willing to learn and follow established protocols for water quality testing and laboratory safety
Duties & Responsibilitiesadd
- Learn proper sample collection techniques and conduct routine water quality testing using standard laboratory equipment including probes, spectrophotometers, and reagents
- Maintain accurate records of water quality testing results and communicate findings to laboratory staff
- Support laboratory cleanliness and organization, including equipment cleaning, trash removal, and general upkeep
- Perform work in a manner that supports the Aquarium’s mission and reflects its core values and service standards
- Assist husbandry and operations staff with routine tasks as needed and appropriate
- Participate in research initiatives under laboratory staff guidance when opportunities arise
Working Conditionsadd
- Laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals, reagents, and laboratory equipment
- Wet and humid conditions with temperature variations around different aquatic systems
- Standing and walking for extended periods
- Lifting and carrying materials up to 50 pounds
- Frequent use of ladders and occasional work in confined spaces
Shiftsadd
- Shifts are offered based on laboratory needs and volunteer availability
- Shifts typically last 2-4 hours and are scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly
- Training sessions and special projects may require flexible scheduling
Commitmentadd
Volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of 6 months.
