Despite outnumbering them (in species diversity) by a factor of almost ten to one, moths are the quintessential under-appreciated insect. To most people, they’re an almost-spooky nocturnal curiosity at best and a wardrobe-endangering pest at worst.
In reality, moths are hugely important, helping to pollinate plants during the night-time shift when butterflies have called it quits for the day. They’re also more ancient than butterflies, not to mention faster and more efficient and, often, hardier.
