How We’re Using a Laser to Help Our Elderly Lemur Feel More Comfortable

As animals age, they — like humans — tend to begin experiencing geriatric conditions such as arthritis that can diminish their ability to move comfortably. Recently, our veterinary team and animal care specialists demoed a relatively new technology, “cold laser therapy,” in hopes of improving the mobility of our aging female Red-ruffed Lemur, Lyra! The results were positive and almost immediate. Thanks to a generous donation from an Aquarium volunteer, the equipment our team used during a demo period has become a permanent addition to our toolkit for non-invasively improving the quality of life for our aging animal population.
