Education Volunteers assist the Education Department by engaging with guests throughout the Aquarium to enhance their visit. Volunteers are stationed in galleries to interpret exhibits, animals, and plants by offering educational information through storytelling and meaningful guest interactions. They engage visitors through cart stations and exhibit interpretation. This role requires accurate educational knowledge, effective guest engagement techniques, and excellent customer service skills.
Please note: Education Volunteers do not work directly with animals. The primary focus of this position is guest engagement, interpretation, and education.
Tennessee Aquarium galleries in both buildings: Ocean Journey & River Journey

- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish and/or proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is a plus

- Interpret exhibits and habitats through cart programs and biofact interpretation
- Communicate environmental messages that emphasize the interconnectedness of living things and the importance of stewardship
- Extend exceptional hospitality to all Tennessee Aquarium guests
- Self-schedule shifts online through the VicNet portal
- Contact the Volunteer Services Team if you are unable to work your scheduled shift
Volunteers are required to attend all six (6) group training sessions, which are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Shifts are available seven days a week. Adult and teen volunteers may select from the following shifts:
• 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM ET
• 12:30 PM – 4:00 PM ET
Adults
- Commit to one year of service.
- Volunteer a minimum of three 3.5-hour shifts per month.
- At least one shift per month must be on a weekend.
- Minimum commitment: 10.5 hours per month (approximately 126 hours per year).
Teens (ages 16-17)
- Commit to six months of service.
- Volunteer a minimum of two 3.5-hour shifts per month.
- At least one shift per month must be on a weekend.
- Minimum commitment: 7 hours per month (approximately 42 hours over six months).
